In 2003 under the prodding’s of IIHW board members Dr. Reed Christensen and Robert Sparrow the Institute convinced Rio Verde University to consider a major commitment by joining with it in creating the Tire Mountain of New Mexico used tire recycling project.

Fitting into the mission of the Institute, which is an ‘environmental and nutritional research base Institute’, Tire Mountain became a reality.  In late 2002 the IIHW had acquired 80 acres by way of donation from Sunnyside Farms, Inc., in Columbus, New Mexico. Because of it’s rural location members immediately felt this would be an exceptional place to create a recycling research and processing center. The project centers around the concept of finding ways to make tire recycling ‘environmently beneficial, economically viable, while showing the potential for commercial application across the country.

Today over 71,000 tires annually are baled at the site. These bales are used for a plethora of commercial, agricultural, civil engineering, and water saving projects. One project the Institute has become keenly involved in is the Gro-Tunnel® (a patent pending technology) that utilizes tire bales to create gigantic hothouses, often on a scale of over 10,000 square feet. Because of the unique insulating factors inherent in tire bales, the IIHW is working on technologies which will allow it to grow high end produce year round, in virtually any climate and setting.
